Land use is considered to play a very important role regarding the life cycle impacts of many products or product groups. During the last ten years, several approaches to address the problem of integrating land use into the LCA framework have been proposed, nonetheless as yet no commonly accepted method has been agreed upon.
An applicable approach to incorporate land use indicators into the GaBi 4 LCA software system has been developed by LBP-GaBi (University of Stuttgart) together with PE INTERNATIONAL. Land use can now be addressed for all relevant land-intensive processes, for example, for mining processes. In the first edition, Life Cycle Inventory data concerning erosion resistance, mechanical filtration, physical and chemical filtration, groundwater regeneration rate, net primary biomass production and hemeroby are calculated for the transformation and occupation phase of land use. These values are then aggregated to form environmental indicators representative for the whole life cycle of a product.
The new land use databases will be delivered free of charge to all current GaBi users and will be an integral part of the standard GaBi package for new users. More information to come...watch this space!

Act on the requirements of directives and laws. Use one powerful, transparent tool for all life cycle considerations.
If you want to consider different regulations during product design, such as the EU Directives for end-of –life-vehicles, for waste electrical and electronic equipment, energy using products or for the restriction of hazardous substances, then GaBi DfX is your tool.
GaBi DfR supports recycling orientated product design, with GaBi DfE offers extensive functions for transparently analyses of a product’s life cycle and GaBi DfD assists in analysing disassembly processes.

Electronics is a field of continuous change and innovation. Products are available in numerous facets and shapes, using various electronic components and electric systems. A challenge for LCA datasets – a challenge that PE INTERNATIONAL and LBP-GaBi (University of Stuttgart) have now met. The new electronics extension database is available from August 2007 and will fully update the existing version, known and implemented by our customers for many years.
The new electronics extension database facilitates modular modelling of almost any populated printed wiring board. It goes without saying that it also accounts for the requirements of WEEE, RoHS and EuP. You can choose from typical, average electronic components, characterised by name (e.g. SOT323), housing description (e.g. 0201, 1608 etc.), mass, size, pin number and lead free tag. You’ll also have access to various FR4 substrates, solder pastes (with lead and lead free), mechanical parts (such as shielding or connectors) and datasets for average assembly lines. Pre-defined exemplary models allow electronic boards to be modelled in a snap. In combination with our other databases, you can model and analyse entire electronic products conveniently and efficiently.
For those of you who want to delve into more detail, PE INTERNATIONAL also offers parametric models of semiconductors, TFT panels, connectors and other electronic components.
The new electronics database is also compatible with GaBi DfX, the software for compliance and sustainable product development.

Sustainability assessments are becoming more and more important. After years of research, development and data collection at LBP GaBi, University of Stuttgart and PE, background data on major social impacts are now available for all GaBi databases.
For the first time, you can assess social impacts in Life Cycles as well as environmental and economic impacts.
This is a significant landmark on the path towards full sustainability assessments.
The new social impact databases will be delivered free to all current GaBi users and will be an integral part of the standard GaBi package for new users. The first edition includes social indicators for working time, qualification profile of jobs and lethal and non-lethal accidents. It will be released in spring 2007.
