  • When purchasing a GaBi License, can I use it on several computers?

No, unfortunately this is not possible. A license of GaBi is always bound to the computer that it is installed on. GaBi licensing works with the principle “Buy one, Install one”.

For information on how to transfer a license from one computer to another or what to do if you have to reinstall GaBi for any other reason please read What do I have to do if I want to transfer a license from one computer to another? .

  • What do I have to consider if I already have a GaBi 6 demo or a GaBi 6 test license running on my computer?

Installing GaBi 6 on a computer already has a GaBi 6 demo or a GaBi 6 test license installed, may lead to license file related issues. Please uninstall the GaBi 6 demo or the GaBi 6 test license before proceeding with the installation of GaBi 6 Professional.

  • What do I have to do if I want to transfer a license from one computer to another?

If you want to use GaBi on another computer, it cannot simply be uninstalled on the old computer and installed on the new one.

In order to use GaBi on another computer the GaBi support team has to send you a deactivation key. To receive such a key, simply send your license information to the GaBi support team, as described in How can I send my license information to thinkstep?.

Once you received this deactivation key, open GaBi and select Help > License … > License viewer … in the menu bar. A new window called License viewer appears. At the bottom of this window click Activation Key and enter the key you received. Click OK and your license will be deactivated.

After this has been done, inform the GaBi support team and they will enable you to reactivate your GaBi license.

  • What do I have to do if I have to reinstall GaBi for any reason?

There are two possible types of reasons why you might have to reinstall GaBi:

    1. Expected reasons (OS update, planned formatting of the hard drive etc.)

    2. Unexpected reasons (Hardware broken, etc.)

In the case of expected reasons, the GaBi support team has to send you a deactivation key. In order to receive such a key, please send your license information to the GaBi support team and follow the description of How can I send my license information to PE International? .

In the case of unexpected reason, please send an email to support spamgeschützt @ spamgeschützt GaBi-software.com explaining your situation. We will then come back to you with a solution.

  • Which actions should I NOT perform with the license file?

As your GaBi license file is bound to one particular computer and sensitive to system changes there are a number of actions which you should not perform under any circumstances after you have registered GaBi online:

    1. Never delete your GaBi license file!

    2. Never move your GaBi license file to another computer or a server location!

These actions will lead to invalidity of your GaBi license file.

  • Where in the directory do I find the GaBi license file?

The standard directory for the GaBi 4 license file is C:\ProgramData\GaBi (for Windows 7 and Vista) or C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\GaBi (for Windows XP).

  • What do I have to do if I cannot find my databases anymore?

The first step is to check the standard GaBi directory.

If you use GaBi 4 please check C:\ProgramData\GaBi\Databases for Windows 7 and Vista or C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Applicationdata\GaBi\Databases for Windows XP.

If you use GaBi 5 please check  C:\ProgramData\PE International\GaBi\Databases for Windows 7 and Vista or C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Applicationdata\PE International\GaBi\Databases for Windows XP.

If you use GaBi 6 please check  C:\ProgramData\PE International\GaBi 6\Databases for Windows 7 and Vista or C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Applicationdata\PE International\GaBi 6\Databases for Windows XP.

If you cannot find your database in this directory please use the search function on your computer and enter *.GaBiDB. This approach will not work for GaBi 4.

  • Where in GaBi do I find the handbook?

The GaBi handbook is integrated into the software. You can access it anytime by pressing the F1-key on your keyboard or by selecting Help > GaBi Help in the GaBi menu.

  • How can I migrate databases from GaBi 4 to GaBi 5/6?

If you have purchased an upgrade from GaBi 4 to GaBi ts you may want to migrate your old databases to the new format. In this case please send an email to support spamgeschützt @ spamgeschützt GaBi-software.com.

  • How can I upgrade my databases (not GaBi 4)?

When activating a GaBi 5 database in GaBi 6 or from GaBi 6 to GaBi 6.3 for the first time, a structural migration happens. The structural migration will not change results and is mandatory. A backup the previous version of your database will be created automatically.

After that, GaBi 6 gives you the option to skip the service pack and database upgrade installation. It allows you to stay on the original database level within GaBi 6.3 and to reproduce results as they were in previous GaBi versions. Service packs and database upgrades can be installed later at any time.

To upgrade your database to the Databases 2013 level (and therefore update your results), you need to install the service pack 24 and DB upgrades. The upgrade process can take several hours depending on the size of the database and the performance of your computer. Do not under any circumstances interrupt the upgrade process until a window appears listing the update protocol.

  • Where can I find new database content after a database update?

In order to generate a database including the new datasets provided with the database upgrade 2013, please proceed as follows:

    - Open the Menu Database and click on Create new database. Now click on Create new database.
    - Select a location to save the newly created database. We recommend saving the database in the standard GaBi database folder.
    - Creating this database may take some time as all available database upgrades are installed to this new database. Please do not interrupt this operation!
    - The new database includes all datasets that are included in the database 2013 (updated content from the Database 2012 and new content of the Database 2013).
    - An overview of the database content 2013, with highlighted new content, is available online: List with all database content

  • Why do the truck datasets give a negative POCP impact?

This phenomenon only appears for the impact category groups CML 2001 - Nov. 2010 and CML2001 - Apr. 2013. The negative POCP in the trucks is caused by the division of the NOX emissions into the two single emissions NO2 and NO during the upgrade from GaBi 4 to GaBi 5/6. The NO has a negative effect on the POCP since it reduces the close ground ozone formation.

There is a discussion in the scientific LCA community about this taking place since the message "We drive a truck and clean the air’" is questionable.

  • How do I transfer single GaBi objects into a different database?

You can transfer single GaBi objects between different databases by simply using GaBi's drag and drop function. Drag and drop the selected object from the activated "source" database into the connected but deactivated "target" database.

Dragging the GaBi object across automatically creates a copy in the same folder as the source database, or, if the folder does not exist in the target database then a new folder will be created.

GaBi objects cannot be exchanged between databases which have different Service Pack levels or are in different languages. Furthermore the "target" database cannot be open in another GaBi instance during the import process.

  • How do I transfer multiple GaBi objects into a different database?

If you want to transfer multiple GaBi objects, we recommend collecting the objects to be transferred in a project and then using GaBi's drag and drop function to transfer the entire project.

    1. Create a new project.

    2. Name and activate the project.

    3. Select the GaBi objects to be transferred (select multiple objects by holding down the Ctrl-key) and add them to your project by using GaBi's drag and drop function or by copying and pasting them.

    4. Drag and drop the project into the "target" database.

A list of all objects that have been collected in the project is generated before the actual export process starts. You can cancel the export if you notice that the export includes any undesired objects.

GaBi objects cannot be exchanged between databases which have different Service Pack levels or are in different languages. Furthermore the "target" database cannot be open in another GaBi instance during the import process.

  • Why does GaBi perform a database update after I installed a new Extension database?

After installing a new Extension database that you have purchased from PE International, it may happen that GaBi performs a quick database update. This only occurs if your new Extension database was released to the market after your original GaBi delivery. The update will take place when you open each of your individual databases. With this small update we ensure that all of your database content is on the same level. Furthermore it ensures smooth data exchange in between databases.

  • Can I import GBX files from GaBi 4 or GaBi 5 into GaBi 6?

It is not possible to import a GBX file that has been exported from a previous GaBi version into my current version.

It is only possible to import a GBX file if both language and Service Pack level of the GBX and the database are similar. You can check on the Service Pack level of your database by right clicking on the connected database in the GaBi object hierarchy and selecting Database information.

  • What do I have to do if this message appears during the update routine: “GaBi requires Administrative privileges to update.”?

When clicking Check for updates sometimes the message GaBi requires Administrative privileges to update. appears. First try to right-click on the EXE file or your shortcut select the option Run as administrator. Then choose the option Check for updates again.

If you have to enter a password here or do not see the option Run as administrator at all, please contact your IT support and ask them to grant you these rights.

  • What can I do if GaBi does not update automatically?

If GaBi does not update automatically this is usually due to firewall restrictions or other security settings that prevent the software from connecting to the update server. Please contact your IT support and ask them to modify the settings respectively.

If this does not solve the problem, you can update GaBi manually. Please send an email to support spamgeschützt @ spamgeschützt GaBi-software.com with the request to receive a manual update file. Following this request you will receive a download link from the GaBi support team. Now execute the file you downloaded with administrative privileges and GaBi will be updated. After this you will receive a download link for each future update.

  • What can I do if this message appears when I try to open a database: “Unable to open database: 'Database Name' was created with a newer version.”?

This message may appear when you try to open a database that you received from another user who works with a newer version of GaBi. In order to be able to open the database, GaBi needs to be updated. To do this, select Help > Check for updates in the GaBi menu. If this does not work, please read What can I do if GaBi does not update automatically? .
