IPCC – the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has published Assessment Report 5 (AR5). This contains updated values used to calculate the climate change/GWP values used in GaBi.



The report AR5 contains updates of the standard GWP 100 using a 100-year timeframe. Furthermore, the report includes GWP20 using a 20 year timeframe.

The implementation of AR5 also introduces Global Temperature Potentials (GTP) with three different timeframes of 20, 50, and 100 years. An explanation of GTP and the difference from GWP is quoted from three paragraphs in AR5:

“Compared to the GWP, the Global Temperature change Potential (GTP) goes one step further down the cause–effect chain and is defined as the change in global mean surface temperature at a chosen point in time in response to an emission pulse - relative to that of CO2.

By accounting for the climate sensitivity and the exchange of heat between the atmosphere and the ocean, the GTP includes physical processes that the GWP does not. The GTP accounts for the slow response of the (deep) ocean, thereby prolonging the response to emissions beyond what is controlled by the decay time of the atmospheric concentration. Thus the GTP includes both the atmospheric adjustment time scale of the component considered and the response time scale of the climate system.

The GTP values can be significantly affected by assumptions about the climate sensitivity and heat uptake by the ocean. Thus, the relative uncertainty ranges are wider for the GTP compared to GWP”



Normalisation is developed by thinkstep for the year 2000 calculated with the same quantified emission used to characterize e.g. CML and ReCiPe methodologies. The factors are developed for USA, EU25+3, and global.



As AR5 contains only one environmental impact, it is not possible to perform weighting.
