Description

The Environmental Footprint (EF) is an initiative of the European Commission, establishing a common methodological approach for quantifying the environmental performance of any good or service throughout its life cycle.

Characterisation

There are two distinct sets of the official EF characterization factors: version EF 2.0, which is for use for PEF/OEF studies under any of the PEFCRs/OEFSRs developed in the EF pilot phase. Version EF 3.0, which is for use in any other PEF/OEF studies outside PEFCRs/OEFSRs, for the development of new PEFCRs/OEFSRs during the now ongoing EF transition phase and for implementing PEF/OEF studies under any of the PEFCRs/OEFSRs to be developed in the EF transition phase
Note that the Climate Change (biogenic) does not actually takes into account biogenic carbon uptake and re-emission. It is only included when carbon uptake is re-emitted as biogenic methane e.g. from anaerobic degradation in landfills.

We recommend our customers to be cautious when drawing conclusions based on the results for the toxicity assessment methods (i.e. human toxicity cancer, human toxicity non-cancer, and freshwater eco-toxicity) as well as resource depletion (minerals and metals). The methodologies might not be robust and proficient enough, as well as are lacking application experience with widely used LCI databases, to make important decisions upon the results calculated with those impact assessment methods.
