EN 15804

EN 15804: 2019

Description

The amended standard EN 15804 (2019) is used to calculate environmental indicators to use in Environmental Product Declaration (EPDs). The standard has just undergone national voting.

This update now requires user to work with the Environmental Footprint (EF) elementary flow list and impact methodologies EF 3.0 from the EU Commission, with the exception below.

Characterization

The specific characterization factors are a direct copy of the Environmental Footprint with one notable exception.

  • The Environmental Footprint (EF) does not include biogenic carbon uptake and release
  • The EN 15804 includes explicitly biogenic carbon uptake and re-emission.

We recommend our customers to be cautious when drawing conclusions based on the results for the toxicity assessment methods (i.e. human toxicity cancer, human toxicity non-cancer, and freshwater eco-toxicity) as well as resource depletion (minerals and metals). The methodologies might not be robust and proficient enough, as well as are lacking application experience with widely used LCI databases, to make important decisions upon the results calculated with those impact assessment methods.

Normalization and weighting

Normalization and weighting is not applicable to EN 15804.

EN 15804: 2013

Description

The standard EN 15804 is used to calculate environmental indicators to use in Environmental Product Declaration (EPDs).

The introduction of EN 15804 as a separate group of characterization factors is meant to align more specifically to the EN 15804 standard without additional calculations done by thinkstep as is the case with the CML values.

Characterization

ADP fossil is still calculated depending on the characterization factor relating directly to the net calorific value of the fuels.

ADPe are not calculated for composites and minerals where the mining operation is not the active route used, e.g. gypsum (CaSO4ยท2H2O) is not characterized for the Sulphur content.

Normalization and weighting

Normalization and weighting is not performed.
